Youth Prevention Program Coordinator

Up to 40 hours per week
Salary: $20.00 – $23.00 per hour
Location: Rice County, MN
Grant funded position through June 2025

Summary

Provide staff support to HCI-supported coalitions and grant-funded initiatives to support youth substance abuse prevention as part of the Rice County Chemical & Mental Health Coalition. Under the direction of the Rice County Chemical and Mental Health Coalition Director, lead collaborative school- and community-based prevention efforts designed to promote health and well-being for Rice County youth.

Tasks

  • Lead youth engagement work for HCI’s Anti-Vaping and Sober Truth on Preventing Underage Drinking Act grants, implement HCI’s contract to provide substance abuse prevention programming to BIPOC students, and support implementation of other prevention programming in both Faribault and Northfield.
  • Convene partners and/or youth that are key stakeholders in the initiatives, prepare agendas & meeting materials, and write & disseminate meeting notes (including the Northfield Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention, Rice County Chemical & Mental Health Coalition’s Prevention Partnerships for Healthy Youth committee and youth leaders in the Anti-Vaping initiative)
  • Attend local and national conferences and trainings as required by grant commitments.
  • Follow up on action commitments between meetings and maintain consistent communication by email, phone, and in-person with stakeholders
  • Work with school partners (middle school, high school, and colleges) to implement annual youth social norms marketing campaigns at the middle, high school and postsecondary levels as outlined in the grant work plans
  • Select/develop and implement community education campaigns around underage drinking and the local social host ordinances
  • Support trainings for parents, teachers, and/or youth development staff on evidence-based topics related to youth alcohol abuse prevention
  • Assist with the identification and promotion of evidence-based alcohol and e-cigarette use prevention curricula and programs for use in Rice County schools
  • Work with school partners to administer a required annual youth survey about youth drug and alcohol use
  • Maintain a data dashboard to track work plan outcomes and prepare/submit grant reports

Additional tasks

  • Assist the Rice County Chemical and Mental Health Coalition Director with grant record-keeping, writing, management, and reporting
  • Work with staff team to generate content for communications and awareness-building efforts

Required qualities

  • Bachelor’s degree or commensurate experience
  • Experience and passion for working directly with youth
  • Experience or skills well suited to facilitating public meetings
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word, and Excel) and Google Suite
  • Highly organized with superior attention to detail
  • Excellent ability to multi-task and troubleshoot issues
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Experience adapting style and methods of communication in order to effectively engage youth and community members
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and as a member of a team
  • Capable of completing work on time in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a positive attitude
  • Comfort with, and ability to navigate, a dynamic and changing work environment
  • Ability to work some late afternoon and evening hours
  • Valid Minnesota driver’s license and the ability to travel within Rice County
  • Willingness to maintain the standards, carry out the purpose, and adhere to the policies of the Healthy Community Initiative
  • Maintenance of a cell phone is an expectation of employment

Preferred qualities

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish or Somali
  • Familiarity with organizations in Rice County
  • 2-5 years of experience in coalition building and youth development
