Youth Grants
Sports Equipment Scholarships
May 2019
Students from lower-income families are less represented in extracurricular activities. The TORCH Youth Advisory Board (YAB) wanted to address this inequity by looking at one of the areas that is often ignored when thinking about participating in an extra-curricular sport, the equipment needed. Scholarships at the school and in the clubs often cover some or all of the registration fees, but equipment fees can add up quickly; from cleats and skates, to hockey sticks and tennis rackets the equipment needed to play at a competitive level is expensive. The TORCH YAB will use these grant funds to establish a scholarship pool for low-income youth to access to cover equipment costs for both high school and club sports.
