Healthy Community Initiative

A group of young skateboarders worked to construct an indoor skatepark in downtown Northfield. An
indoor skatepark is an addition to the existing outdoor park at Old Memorial Field. Applicants noted a
need for youth to have a space to gather and skate during the winter or in poor weather. The nearest
indoor park at the time was in the Twin Cities and largely inaccessible due to transportation and
financial need. The applying team also noted a scarcity in spaces designed specifically for youth to not
only skate but also gather, socialize and build community. The space was designed with the intention of
making it a multi-use space for youth and community gatherings and has since featured musicians, artist
galleries, and other events.
