HCI Grant Writer

Now in its 30th year, the Healthy Community Initiative (HCI) is a community-based organization whose mission is to foster a collaborative environment in Rice County, Minnesota, that empowers youth, strengthens families, and builds community.

To achieve this, HCI works with community partners to identify needs/opportunities, foster collaboration and support community-driven efforts that benefit local youth and families. By offering its assistance, HCI strives to build the capacity of the community to more effectively serve its young people.

HCI seeks a part- or full-time grant writer.  The full-time equivalent will be based on candidates’ availability, interest and skills; deliverables will be adjusted accordingly. Flexibility exists for this to be a staff position or a contracted relationship. Virtual/remote work is an option.

Tasks for the HCI Grant Writer include:

  • Work with HCI senior leadership to establish grant funding goals for the fiscal year
  • Initiate ongoing communication with key HCI staff to analyze funding needs, gaps and opportunities
  • Research, identify and qualify funding opportunities from corporate, foundation, and government sources
  • Determine proposal concepts by identifying and clarifying opportunities and needs, studying requests for proposals, meeting with HCI staff and partners, and attending strategy meetings
  • Prepare proposals by determining concept, gathering/formatting information, writing drafts, and obtaining approvals
  • Meet proposal deadlines by establishing priorities and target dates for information gathering, writing, review, approval, and transmittal
  • Manage efficient operational system to ensure accurate records and timely communication with funders
  • Oversee grants calendar and maintain up-to-date database records for all institutional donors

Required qualities for the HCI Grant Writer include:

  • Proven experience in grant writing
  • Experience crafting letters of intent, concept papers, and proposals, with aptitude for creating budgets and drafting compelling case statements
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Maintenance of a cell phone is an expectation of employment

Preferred qualities for the HCI Grant Writer include:

  • Strong familiarity with Rice County organizations and resources
  • Knowledge in the fields of asset-based youth development, community innovation, and/or collective impact
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish or Somali
