HCI Communications Coordinator

Now in its 30th year, Healthy Community Initiative (HCI) is a community-based organization whose mission is to cultivate collaborative communities in Rice County that support, value, and empower youth. To achieve this, HCI works with community members and partners to identify needs/opportunities, foster collaboration and support community-driven efforts that benefit local youth and families. By offering its assistance, HCI strives to build the capacity of the community to serve its young people more effectively.

HCI seeks a Communications Coordinator to help monitor and carry out timely and effective implementation of communications plans for HCI’s supported programs. The organization would be open to exploring a flexible part-time commitment, based on a qualified candidate’s interest and availability.  Work is primarily remote, with occasional in-person meetings with staff and community partners each month, as well as visits to program locations.


  • Lead promotion and marketing of afterschool opportunities in the HCI-led PRIMEtime collaborative
  • Compile text and photos for HCI publications, social media, and HCI-supported program websites
  • Write & distribute press releases
  • Support production of short videos for various programs
  • Support programs to compile, format and distribute periodic digital newsletters and brief updates to community partners
  • Gather vignettes and data in support of storytelling about needs and successes in various programs
  • Co-coordinate communications planning/activities with fundraising

Required skills and qualities:

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in nonprofit communications (experienced, polished marketing writer or copyeditor)
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word) and G Suite
  • Proficient with social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter)
  • Website maintenance basics
  • Sensitive/nuanced/balanced about community issues
  • Productive/efficient/self-sufficient
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a positive attitude
  • Highly organized with superior attention to detail
  • Maintenance of a cell phone is an expectation of employment
  • Willingness to maintain the standards, carry out the purpose, and adhere to the policies of Healthy Community Initiative

Preferred qualities:

  • Advanced graphic and/or web design skills
  • Strong familiarity with Rice County organizations and resources
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish or Somali
